Super Senior Pennant – 20 July
Cumberland has continued its strong start to the Pennant season with a comfortable 7 to 1 victory over Strathfield at the well presented Stonecutters Ridge Golf Course.
Leading the way, yet again, was Club Treasurer Robert Shield winning 7 and 6. Our number 1 player James N had an impressive 6 and 5 victory. This was matched by Bruce Lee . Sonny Sun followed close behind with a 5 and 3 win. Paul Hilton won 4 and 3, Paul Barton 3 and 2. John Kiddle marked his return to the team with a narrow 1 up win and Mick Rolls battled hard but succumbed on the last hole going 2 down.
We are aiming to continue our perfect start in this year’s competition with our 4th straight victory this Tuesday, 10.00 am, 28 July, at Muirfield. Supporters are most welcome.

The Cumberland boys started the season off strong with a draw against Brighton Lakes at Lakeside. The course was playing tough and fast but the boys played hard and walked away with a great result for the day.
We take on Richmond next Sunday 2nd August at Brighton Lakes at 11:18am

Warren Pennant – 2nd August 2026
Cumberland’s Warren squad were back at home hosting Randwick Golf Club on a fine sunny day that had the boys full of confidence looking to defend our home course and move back into contention in a tight division with home wins being critical.
Our 3rd pairing of Rob Madeleine & Glenn Gibson got off to flying start and were 3 up early maintaining the dominance through to the turn with the with a 3up lead, the opposition found themselves 5 down not long into the back 9 and after a little fight back our boys were victorious 5/4 getting us off to the perfect start with some solid golf.
Our 2nd pairing of Keith Barton & Aaron Lewis had a tougher struggle on their hands against a couple of seasoned players from Randwick whose short games from 100 out were exemplary for B grade golf and seemed to be taking it in turns as to who was making par.
The match seesawed with no more then 1 hole in it with Randwick sinking a great putt on the 16th to take a 1up lead, unfortunately on the 17th neither of our guys could scramble for a par and as they had done all day Randwick held their composure over a breaking 4 foot putt to secure themselves a 2/1 win tying the overall match at 1-1, with the final pairing left on the course the match was set for a grandstand finish and did not disappoint.
Our 1st pairing of captain Davin Peters & David Harvey were also in a dog fight with 1up or down being the biggest margin of the day and on the 16th with the match all square Davin seized the opportunity to take us to the 17th tee 1up by sinking a tricky downhill 3ft putt for par after his opponent missed his uphill par putt from 6ft to exert some pressure.
With 3 of the 4 players missing the fairway on 17 the advantage swung back to the Randwick player who was only 90 out but failed to take the opportunity leaving his 2nd on the front collar and needing to get up and down for par to a yellow flag which on the new green was not going to be easy, David hit a great recovery out of the trees to the front of the green and fortunately for us bogey was good enough to head to the 18th 1up with the daunting tee shots across the water in front of now a decent gallery with both squads and supporters on the hill seeing who was going to faulter under the pressure.
David & Davin both hit great shots to about 10 & 8ft with one Randwick player also hitting an impressive shot to around 12ft, the other Randwick player finding himself 30 plus feet away.
Whilst no player could bath themselves in glory by sinking their birdie putts, par was good enough for us to win 1 up and seal the overall victory 2/1.
It was a great effort from the boys given what was on the line, needing the win and with 2 matches being so tight the determination to hang in was great to see, I am sure the exposure to these types of situations will come in handy at some stage throughout the season.
Thanks to all the caddies, supporters and reserve team members who came out to support, the boys appreciate it and for club culture it is great to see the large groups following.
Thanks also to the club management, staff and the restaurant for the catering which is the talk of the division amongst all visiting clubs.
This week we travel to Randwick who I am sure will be looking to seek redemption on their short but difficult home track.

Gibson Shield team report 26/07/2026
The Gibson Team played away at Kareela last Sunday made up of
Team 1 – Captain Tim Hodder and Peter Cocks
Team 2 – Nick Aravantinos and Campbell Ring
Team 3 – Steve Charles and Wayne Barton.
We all turned up to perfect weather and a golf course unseen by any player that on first glance, looked “rather quirky”
Each team got of to a rocky start with all losing the first hole to Kareela. Nick and Campbell got behind by three at one stage but fought back being edged out at the 17th hole 2 and 1
Whilst Tim and Peter were behind early they bounced back hard, getting square after three holes. By the time they got to the ninth tee, they had found their momentum, were four ahead when Captain Tim shaved the hole for an almost “Ace” on the 9th hole which set the stage for them to draw away to a 5 and 4 win
Steve and Wayne found themselves on the back nine two down when on the elevated 12th tee, Wayne sent a six iron soaring in the air to land a very handy four feet from the hole, resulting in a concession. Winning two of the next four holes and standing on the 17th tee at one hole up, this set the scene for a dramatic finish.
Whilst golf is not drawn in pictures, the final two holes turned out to be a masterpiece in suspense. With the 17th hole halved after a miraculous Wayne (Pig Puma) Barton, 7 iron bump and run put pressure on their number one player who failed to get up and down from just off the green, they headed up the hill to the matted18th tee.
The 18th hole a short par three that sits on the side of a cliff that drops straight down to the right and looks barely 5 metres wide, took two prisoners off the tee, one from each team down the grass cliff. However, Wayne with a steady 8 iron found his ball about seven metres from the green and chose to putt up to about three metres with the other Kareela player just getting inside him from 30 metres short of the green. Meanwhile, with an audience of many, Steve Charles pitched up from below the cliff to a flat spot about 5 feet above the green and with a chip that WILL NOT stop from going down the green over the cliff, the ball smashes into the flag and stops 2 inches from the hole securing the bogey and freeing up Wayne to sink a par which just drifted away from the cup. A brilliant 1 up win after being down most of the match, with Kareela failing to save their par.
A great team effort giving us 2 and1 away win has now put the Gibson team into a sound position moving forward, being the only team in our group to secure an away win, thus far.
