Masters Pennant – Finals Rd 1

The Cumberland master Pennant Team has qualified for the final. After an unbeaten regular season the team was seeded 1 for the semi-finals and came up against Campbelltown who were seeded 4.

The venue was Richmond and overnight rain made the conditions challenging. Knowing they needed to win 5 matches the team went to work.

Results were looking good early on with most players up in their matches by the 5th hole. By 9 we were up in 6 of the 8 matches.

Ian McCarthy was first in, thumping his opponent 7&5. Greg Northam followed soon afterwards winning 5&4. Mark Guinney continued his great season with a 4&3 victory. Lennie Lambert proved his value with another stella win 5&4. Craig Paul was the winning match, taking care of his opponent 2 up.

A huge thankyou goes out to the supporters who braved the conditions to cheer the boys on. As always thanks to the caddies who support their players no end!

The team will play against North Ryde in the final and we will let you know the venue as soon as we have it.

Super Senior Pennants Round 2 v Cabramatta
On Tuesday 23 July, Cumberland played Cabramatta in Round 2 of SSP at Liverpool GC (renamed as Oak Point GC as a result of the recent amalgamation with Kogarah GC).The course was in excellent condition considering the recent poor weather and lack of preparation time for greens staff.
The match produced a very strong performance from our team, with Cumberland defeating Cabramatta by 7 games to 1. Resounding wins for our #1 player James Park (7/5), #3 Bruce Lee(7/6) and #6 Peter Lavercombe (7/6). YoungsterJohn Kiddle, in his first game representing the club as a Super Senior, had a strong 4/3 win and Mick Rolls continued his good form, with his customary birdie start, to win comfortably 3/2. Like Mick, both Steve Greene (#7) and Kerry Whitby (#8) , its two wins from 2 matches with Steve winning 3/2 and Kerry, as he has done so often over the years, falling over the line 1 up. Grant Boatswain, who was square to hole 13 succumbed to an injured shoulder (ex football star) and a tough opponent going down 3/2.
In Round 3, Cumberland will face Brighton Lakes at Cabramatta GC on Monday (29 July), hit-off time 11.00 am. Support most welcome.

Warren & Gibson Pennants – Round 1 v Bexley

Gibson
Our team travelled to Bexley for the first round of this year’s Gibson Trophy competition and unfortunately, we went down to the home side 2/1. Despite the result, I was very proud of the way the team conducted themselves and the spirit in which they represented Cumberland. It’s important to note that half our team have not played Pennants before and although they were nervous to start with, they soon settled down and put up a good fight. The two Chris’s, Clifford and Waring played a see saw match against Bexley’s number one players before they won their match 2/1.

I would like to make special mention of the caddies and the many supporters who came along to support the team. The hospitality of the Bexley Club was outstanding.

We are at home next Sunday at 11am when our guys will be looking to turn the tables against Bexley. All Cumberland supporters will be very much appreciated.

Warren
For round 1 of this year’s Warren Competition we took on Bexley at Bexley Golf Course.
The boys fought hard in each match but the home ground advantage took its toll on our team going down 3/0. The players have a great amount of pride in playing for Cumberland and are determined to bounce back next week on our home course.

We want to thank the caddies and supporters who came out to support us and hope you can make it again next Sunday.
