With warmer weather and a new course, things are looking up with new memberships, increased field sizes and clubhouse patronage.  We’ve got some more improvements on the way with extra drainage on fairways and building of a new tee box on the 12^th.

DEVELOPMENT WORKS UPDATE – The Next Stage Begins

Members will have noticed that activity around the development site has continued to increase over recent weeks.  We are now approaching the next significant stage of works, with the project moving from site preparation into more visible civil works.

As we have said throughout the development, our priority is to work closely with the project team to minimise disruption to members and the operation of the golf course wherever reasonably possible.  Over the coming weeks, however, there will be some temporary changes that members should be aware of.

Fencing and environmental controls have now been installed around part of the overflow parking area in preparation for excavation works.  These works are expected to commence September 28th. While the usable overflow parking area will be temporarily reduced, sufficient parking is expected to remain available.  Once the works in this area are completed, the affected parking surface will also be reinstated.

Another noticeable change will be the removal of the large existing netting, currently underway. In conjunction with these works we will be looking to undertake the additional drainage works within areas of the new course that have been identified by both the Superintendent and Harrison Golf

Works Around the 12th Tee

The most significant impact on golf during this next stage will occur around the 12th tee.

Civil works are expected to commence early October to install the new sewer infrastructure running behind the existing 12th tee complex.  The civil component is expected to take approximately four weeks.  During this period, the 12th hole will need to operate from a shortened tee position while the works are undertaken.

Once the underground infrastructure has been completed, the intention is for Fleming Golf to move directly into reconstruction of the 12th tee area, reducing the period between the civil works and golf-course reinstatement as much as possible.  Fleming Golf and the development contractors are now coordinating their respective programmes so the transition between the two stages can be managed efficiently.

The completed works will be much more than simply reinstating what is currently there.  The area is planned to include a reconstructed teeing complex, new concrete paths and an improved turning area behind the tee, with the area beyond incorporated into the surrounding natural landscape.

There will undoubtedly be some inconvenience while this work takes place, and it may coincide with some important golfing events during October.  We will continue to manage the playing arrangements carefully and provide members with more specific information as confirmed construction dates become available.

The installation of several time lapse cameras will be installed in the coming weeks with an aim to provide live updates as the project continues

Turning Development Works into a Course Benefit

One of the less visible but very valuable opportunities arising from the development is the retention of suitable sandy loam from the former 1st fairway and development area.

Rather than allowing all of this material to leave the site, suitable material will be separated, screened and retained by the Club for future use across the golf course. The quantity involved is substantial and will provide the Course team with a valuable resource for future topdressing and course improvement works that would otherwise need to be purchased and transported to the Club.

This is a good example of the approach we are taking throughout the project — looking beyond simply managing the construction by identifying opportunities where the development can provide additional long-term benefits to Cumberland.

Over the next several months, the development will become increasingly visible. There will occasionally be temporary changes to how parts of the surrounding areas operate, but these are part of progressing a project that represents an important next chapter for the Club.

Well done to you all!

Congratulations to both our Super senior and Gibson Pennant teams who made it to the finals.  The super senior team won their Division.  Unfortunately, they were beaten in their Semi Final losing to Cronulla.  The Gibson team also won their section.  Sadly, they too were knocked out in the first round of the finals’ series losing to Bexley.

Once again, I ask all you to be mindful when booking your groups onto the time sheet.  If you know that someone is unavailable. please don’t book them in.  It robs other members of the opportunity to get a game and enjoy the new course layout.  Also, for those who have booked in but think they might be unable to play please cancel your booking as early as possible to give the people on the waitlist a chance to get a game.

Our Encourage Shield Team kick of their season in October in what looks to be a very competative disision with Castle Hill, Pennant Hills, Ryde-Parramatta, Asquith and North Ryde. We wish the players selected all the best and know they will do Cumberland proud.

The season commences on Sunday 11th October at Castle Hill  v Pennant Hills. As always member support is welcome.

Spring is finally here, and the course is beginning to show the benefits of warmer days and improved growing conditions.  Across the course, the fairways are responding well, the rough is thickening, and the greens continue to recover strongly from winter.

The team has worked tirelessly through the colder months to ensure the course is well positioned heading into the busiest period of the golfing calendar.  Their efforts, combined with improved course etiquette from many members, are making a noticeable difference. More pitch marks are being repaired, more divots are being filled, and bunker presentation has improved significantly.  Thank you to everyone who continues to do their part in caring for the course. Your efforts are making a real difference.

Preparing for Summer Starts Now

The course team is already looking ahead to the warmer months.  Current seasonal forecasts suggest another hot and dry summer may be on the horizon, meaning water management will remain a key focus throughout spring and summer.  One of the most important objectives during this period is improving water retention across the course.  Healthy turf with deeper root systems is better able to withstand extended dry periods, requires less recovery from stress, and provides more consistent playing surfaces throughout the season.

Our team will continue to take a measured and considered approach as temperatures rise. Protecting turf health now helps ensure quality playing conditions can be maintained through the most challenging summer months.  Members may occasionally notice management practices aimed at conserving moisture and promoting healthy growth.  These decisions are taken with the long-term condition and sustainability of the course firmly in mind.

Course Care Reminders

• Repair your pitch mark and at least one additional pitch mark.
• Fill all tee and fairway divots with sand.
• Rake bunkers thoroughly after use, even when the rake is some distance away.
• Observe all ropes, signage and traffic management controls.
• Avoid unnecessary wear around greens and tee complexes.
